Verizon is entering the satellite connectivity space by partnering with AST SpaceMobile, rather than following T-Mobile’s lead with SpaceX. Verizon has committed $100 million to this partnership to provide direct-to-cellular satellite service for its customers, utilizing AST SpaceMobile’s 850MHz spectrum compatible with Verizon’s 4G and 5G networks.
AST SpaceMobile, based in Midland, TX, partners with over 45 mobile network providers globally and aims for 100% coverage of the continental U.S. Verizon’s goal is to eliminate dead zones, ensuring connectivity in remote areas where traditional cellular signals are unavailable.
Following the announcement, AST SpaceMobile’s stock surged by over 57%.
