Apple already testing the Messages via Satellite

Google is working on adding satellite messaging to Android phones, while Apple is developing its own version called Messages via Satellite. This new feature, set to arrive with iOS 18, expands on the existing Emergency SOS by allowing users to send and receive texts, emojis, and Tapbacks over satellite to friends and family.

Apple invited CNET to preview Messages via Satellite. Users will receive a notification when in a dead zone, prompting them to use satellite-enabled services like Emergency SOS, Roadside Assistance, Find My, and Messages. Within the Messages app, users can tap “Connect to Satellite” to send texts, which remain end-to-end encrypted. The feature supports SMS but not RCS due to size constraints.

Messages via Satellite will be available for iPhone 14 and later, initially in the US. While currently free, Apple may charge for the service in the future.
