In March, the European Commission began investigating Apple’s new fee structure for alternative app stores, including a “Core Technology Fee” and an additional 3% charge for using Apple’s payment processor. According to the Financial Times, these fees breach the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), marking the first tech company charge under this act. Apple faces fines up to 5% of its daily global turnover, roughly $50 million per day, but could avoid penalties by adjusting its practices to meet the Commission’s requirements.
