Apple trained AI models on YouTube content without consent

Tech giants like Apple used YouTube subtitles from over 170,000 videos to train AI models without creators’ consent, according to a new report. A non-profit, EleutherAI, downloaded these subtitles and included them in a dataset called “the Pile.” Companies like Apple, Nvidia, and Salesforce utilized this dataset for AI training, despite YouTube’s rules against unauthorized data harvesting. Affected creators include Marquees Brownlee, MrBeast, PewDiePie and late-night hosts like Stephen Colbert.
