Google’s Pixel Fold launched in mid-2023, lagging behind competitors’ foldables. Google had an earlier prototype ready by 2022, but scrapped it for not meeting standards. Photos and specs of this canceled prototype, codenamed “pipit,” recently surfaced. The “pipit” resembled the final Pixel Fold but featured a seamless glass bar like the Pixel 6 and an older camera setup from the Pixel 3 era. It had a slightly smaller outer display and the same inner display, with a stylus support prototype that was later abandoned. The release was likely postponed due to issues with Android 12’s buggy launch and incomplete features, despite plans to debut it with Android 12L.
