Music labels sue Verizon for more than $2.6 billion

UMG Recordings, Warner Music, and Sony Music filed a lawsuit against Verizon, accusing it of ignoring customers’ copyright violations for profit, potentially amounting to $2.6 billion in damages under the DMCA. The lawsuit lists 17,335 tracks from artists like Elvis Presley and Matchbox Twenty, claiming Verizon ignored nearly 350,000 infringement notices since 2020. The labels argue that Verizon’s lax policies and fast internet service attracted subscribers engaging in piracy. The lawsuit seeks the maximum penalty for each track and attorney’s fees, charging Verizon with contributory and vicarious copyright infringement.
