Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 with an upgrade to an IP48 rating, indicating some protection against solid objects but not dust-resistant. The “4” in IP48 means protection against objects 1mm or larger, so these devices are still vulnerable to dust and sand. However, they maintain full water resistance. In comparison, Motorola’s 2023 foldables had an IP52 rating for dust protection and splash resistance, but their 2024 models switched to an IPX8 rating for water resistance only. Hopefully, future foldables will offer both water and dust resistance.
