The new satellite-powered wireless emergency alert works even without cell service

T-Mobile, in collaboration with SpaceX’s Starlink, has successfully transmitted a wireless emergency alert (WEA) via satellite in the U.S. for the first time. This breakthrough allows users to contact emergency services from their phones even outside traditional cellular coverage. The test involved sending an evacuation notice from a T-Mobile smartphone through a Starlink satellite, reaching its destination in seconds. The system is designed to be carrier-agnostic, benefiting customers of other networks like Verizon and AT&T. T-Mobile and SpaceX aim to expand this technology nationwide, with commercial rollout expected soon.
