Google is updating its Messages app to enable Wear OS smartwatches with LTE to send standalone RCS messages. Currently, RCS messaging only works when the watch is connected to a phone. A recent teardown of the app’s beta version revealed groundwork for this new functionality, allowing LTE-enabled watches to send both text and voice messages over RCS without a phone. It’s unclear if this update will benefit non-LTE watches using Wi-Fi.
