Google’s model can now predict floods in 100 countries

Google is stepping up its efforts to keep people safe, particularly from natural disasters like floods. Using AI, its upgraded flood early warning system now covers 100 countries, reaching 700 million people in high-risk areas—up from 80 countries and 460 million people. Through Flood Hub, Google Search and Maps, residents can receive flood alerts up to seven days in advance, giving them crucial time to prepare.

The system also helps first responders plan and offers users tools to report road closures, improving real-time updates. Google’s new API will assist researchers and responders in predicting incidents more accurately, even in areas without monitoring hardware, using historical data dating back to 1981. This advancement showcases how AI can provide real-world benefits beyond everyday tech conveniences.
