Huawei has unveiled the Mate 70 series and Mate X6 foldable, marking its shift away from Android to Harmony OS Next, a fully in-house operating system. Unlike the original Harmony OS, which was Android-based, Harmony OS Next drops Android support entirely. This limits compatibility with Android apps, though HUAWEI reports 10,000 apps are already supported, with plans to reach 100,000 soon.
The Mate 70 series will launch with Harmony OS 4.3, retaining some Android elements, with updates to Harmony OS Next arriving later. By 2025, HUAWEI aims to make Harmony OS Next standard on all its devices, betting on its ability to build a new ecosystem and win over users and developers.
