A recent report revealed that Apple’s new “Inactivity Reboot” feature in iOS 18.1 automatically reboots iPhones after three days of inactivity, making them harder to hack. The feature, which operates through the Secure Enclave Processor (SEP), reboots the device and encrypts data until the passcode is re-entered. This enhances security against tools like Cellebrite and Pegasus spyware. Apple quietly introduced the feature and continues to refine it in iOS 18.2.
Security researcher Jiska Classen later discovered that this behavior is caused by a new feature called “Inactivity Reboot,” which has now been reverse-engineered by Classen. The researcher detailed in a blog post how exactly Inactivity Reboot was implemented by Apple – which did everything quietly without publicly announcing the new security feature.
