Brazilian company still believes that it created the first iPhone

Apple faces a legal dispute in Brazil over the “iPhone” trademark with local company Gradiente, which claims to have patented the name first. Gradiente launched its “Gradiente Iphone” in 2000, seven years before Apple’s iPhone, selling 30,000 units. However, due to a separate legal issue, Gradiente only secured the trademark in 2008, after Apple’s iPhone debut.

In 2012, Gradiente revived the name for an Android smartphone, sparking a legal battle with Apple. The Brazilian regulator revoked Gradiente’s exclusive rights in 2013, and the case is now awaiting a Supreme Court decision. Gradiente’s CEO defends the company’s innovation, emphasizing it predates Apple’s iPhone but praises Steve Jobs’ groundbreaking product. No trial date has been set.
