Google’s quantum computing lab unveiled a breakthrough with its new chip, Willow, capable of completing a task in under five minutes that would take the fastest supercomputers 10 septillion years. This marks a significant leap from its 2019 milestone, with improved performance and real-time error correction using 105 qubits.
The team achieved “below threshold” error rates, a critical milestone for scaling quantum systems, published in Nature. Google aims to achieve its first “useful, beyond-classical” computation for real-world applications like AI training, medicine discovery and energy innovation. Competitors like Microsoft, Amazon and IBM are also advancing in the quantum race.
