TSMC’s Arizona plant, the first in the US to produce A-series chips for Apple devices, is expected to begin mass production this quarter, following successful test production and final verification by Apple. Initially announced in 2022 as part of the US CHIPS Act, the project aims to reduce reliance on China for advanced chips and create local jobs.
While production was delayed from its original 2024 schedule, mass production of older device chips is now imminent, with advanced 2nm chip production slated for 2028. Apple also plans to use a US-based facility for chip packaging, addressing earlier concerns about shipping output to Taiwan.
However, the project has faced criticism over TSMC hiring practices, with many workers brought in from Taiwan rather than the US, sparking a lawsuit alleging “anti-American discrimination.”
