South Korea has banned the Chinese AI app DeepSeek over alleged violations of local data protection laws. As a result, Apple and Google must remove the app from their stores, though it remains accessible via web browser for now.
DeepSeek has acknowledged partial non-compliance and appointed legal representatives in South Korea. The regulator says the ban could be lifted if the app meets privacy law requirements.
DeepSeek, known for its efficient AI model “R1,” has gained global popularity, even topping the US App Store. It was previously banned in Italy, and a US senator has proposed fines for using Chinese AI.
