Pixel Phones help to keep New York’s subways safe

Your smartphone is packed with sensors, some visible like cameras and others hidden like accelerometers. These sensors enable useful features, such as Pixel phones detecting car crashes. Now, New York City’s MTA is using Pixel phones to help with subway maintenance.

Maintaining 665 miles of track is a massive task, usually done through manual inspections or expensive sensor-equipped trains. Partnering with Google, the MTA tested whether Pixel phones could replace some of this equipment. By attaching phones to subway cars, the TrackInspect system used vibrations, audio and AI to detect track issues, accurately identifying 92% of confirmed problems during a four-month trial.

While human inspectors still oversee maintenance, this technology could make their jobs easier and improve subway safety.
