The EU has outlined how Apple must improve iOS interoperability to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). By the end of 2025, Apple must open key features to third-party devices, including iOS notifications for smartwatches, background app functionality, SharePlay, audio switching, AirDrop and AirPlay. Other platforms will also gain better connectivity, easier setup and NFC-based contactless payments. Failure to comply could result in hefty fines. Apple opposes the changes, calling them harmful to its products and users, but the EU remains firm on enforcing the rules.
