Google Maps is starting to use Android 16’s live update notifications

Google Maps is the first app to adopt Android 16’s new Live Updates feature, which displays real-time navigation details like time to the next turn and ETA on the status bar. Similar to iOS Live Activities, Live Updates provide ongoing notifications for key tasks. Currently, the feature is partially supported in Android 16 beta 2.1, with some limitations on the always-on display. Full implementation is expected as Android 16 nears its June launch.
