Lock screen widgets are coming to phones in Android 16

Google is bringing lock screen widgets to Android phones after initially limiting them to tablets. The feature will debut in Android 16 QPR1, expected in September 2025. Unlike tablets, where widgets appear in a 2×3 grid accessed by swiping, phones will display one column of widgets, triggered by placing the phone on a charger or dock. All Android widgets will be supported, but developers must enable certain permissions for full functionality. OEMs can modify the trigger mechanism but not the interface. This update could encourage more widget development, enhancing the Android experience.
