Light-based internet project Taara is spinning off from Alphabet’s X to become an independent company. Using laser tech to transmit data, Taara aims to rival Starlink in connecting rural areas. Alphabet will retain a minority stake, while Series X Capital provides funding. Operating in 12 countries, Taara offers a cheaper, faster alternative to fiber, with speeds of up to 20Gbps over 20km. A compact chip version is expected by 2026. Originally part of the Loon project, Taara is now positioning itself as a high-bandwidth, low-cost connectivity solution for remote locations.
