The UK has designated Apple and Google as having “strategic market status,” subjecting them to new rules under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act (DMCC), similar to the EU’s DMA. Apple pushed back, calling the changes “bad for users and developers,” warning it could delay features in the UK as it has in Europe. Apple argued the rules threaten privacy, security and innovation, particularly around interoperability and anti-steering. The UK regulator, however, said its proposals are narrower than Apple claims and aim to boost competition without undermining privacy or IP.
