A US court ruling that Google holds an unlawful search monopoly could one day force it to sell Chrome, and Perplexity AI is trying to get ahead of the outcome. The three-year-old startup has made an unsolicited $34.5 billion cash offer for the browser, despite it not being for sale and being worth less than half that itself. Perplexity promises to keep Chrome open source, invest $3 billion, and retain Google as the default search engine. While a sale is unlikely until legal appeals are exhausted, interest from Perplexity, OpenAI, Yahoo, and others underscores Chrome’s value in the AI race.
