Amazon has revealed new details about its plan to expand nuclear energy in Washington State, partnering with Energy Northwest to develop up to 12 small modular reactors by the early 2030s. What’s different about these reactors is that they’re small and modular, which is supposed to make them cheaper and easier to deploy than America’s existing fleet of nuclear power plants.
The first project, the Cascade Advanced Energy Facility near Richland, will generate 960 megawatts — enough to power about 770,000 homes — while taking up just a few city blocks. It’s expected to create over 1,000 construction jobs and 100 permanent positions, with construction slated to begin by the end of the decade.
