Apple may face penalty near $2 billion in UK App Store monopoly case

A UK tribunal has ruled that Apple abused its dominant position by charging app developers excessive commissions on App Store sales between 2015 and 2020.

The Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) found that Apple unfairly restricted competition and overcharged developers, who then passed about half of those costs on to consumers. The case, representing millions of UK iPhone and iPad users, could cost Apple up to $2 billion in damages.

Apple plans to appeal the ruling, calling it a “flawed view of the competitive app economy.” A follow-up hearing next month will determine the final damages and whether Apple can proceed with its appeal.
