OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that starting December, ChatGPT will permit erotica and other mature content for users who verify their age, as part of a new age-gating system. The move aligns with OpenAI’s goal to “treat adult users like adults.”
Altman said restrictions were originally tightened to protect mental health but made ChatGPT “less useful” for many. With new mental health detection tools in place, OpenAI plans to safely relax content limits.
The company also formed a “well-being and AI” council to guide responses to sensitive situations. Meanwhile, a new ChatGPT version “more like what people liked about GPT-4o” is coming soon, following mixed reactions to the default switch to GPT-5.
