ICE ordered vehicles equipped with smartphone-tracking hardware

ICE in the US has ramped up surveillance efforts, recently spending over $800,000 on “Cell Site Simulator” vehicles – better known as Stingrays, which mimic cell towers to track nearby phones. These tools can log all devices in an area, raising concerns about monitoring protests and targeting immigrants. While ICE has used such tech for years, new protections are emerging, including Android 16’s “Network notifications” feature and DIY detection projects like the EFF’s Rayhunter.
