California has passed a new law requiring streaming service ads to match the volume of regular content. Signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, Senate Bill 576 extends the 2010 CALM Act – which regulated TV ads – to platforms like Netflix, Disney Plus, Prime Video and YouTube. The rule takes effect July 1, 2026, aiming to end loud ad interruptions, especially after complaints about ads waking sleeping children. Other states may follow California’s lead.
