OpenAI’s new Sora app has surpassed 1 million downloads in less than five days, outpacing ChatGPT’s initial growth despite being invite-only, according to Sora head Bill Peebles.
Launched on September 30 for iOS, the app lets users create and scroll through AI-generated videos using the Sora 2 model, including a “cameos” feature to insert themselves or friends into clips.
Sora’s rapid rise has also sparked backlash over users generating copyrighted or inappropriate content, prompting OpenAI to tighten controls and let users manage how their likeness is used.
The app is currently available only in the US and Canada and sits at the top of Apple’s App Store.
