OpenAI and Jony Ive’s upcoming AI device is reportedly facing several development hurdles that could delay its release, according to The Financial Times.
Challenges include defining the assistant’s voice and personality, addressing privacy concerns and securing enough computing power to support OpenAI’s models on a consumer device. Unlike Amazon or Google, OpenAI lacks large-scale compute infrastructure.
The palm-sized, screenless gadget will use a microphone, camera and speaker, functioning like an advanced smart speaker that’s always on and designed to learn from its surroundings. The team aims to make the assistant feel natural — “like Siri but better” — without being too robotic or overly chatty. Privacy concerns remain a key issue due to its continuous data collection and cloud dependency.
