Pixel phones will get a smarter AOD that saves battery life

Google is preparing a new “turn off display on inactivity” option for Pixel phones, giving users more control over the Always-On Display (AOD) feature. Discovered in the latest Android Canary build, the setting will automatically power down the AOD when no user activity is detected, helping save battery life.

While details on how inactivity will be measured remain unclear, the feature could work similarly to Samsung’s “auto” AOD, which disables the screen when the phone is face down, in a dark room, or when the user is asleep.

The option isn’t live yet but is expected to appear under Settings > Display > Always-on display, marking the first major step toward a more customizable, power-efficient AOD on Pixel devices.
