Apple is rolling out Digital IDs, letting US users create an ID in Apple Wallet using their passport. The feature will first be accepted at TSA checkpoints in over 250 US airports for domestic travel, working in place of a REAL ID via iPhone or Apple Watch. It can’t replace a physical passport or be used for international travel.
Digital IDs are created by scanning your passport’s photo page and embedded chip, then completing selfie verification. Apple says the feature is encrypted and doesn’t reveal your data to the company. Airport support details are still unclear, and Apple plans to expand Digital ID acceptance to select businesses and organizations in the future.
