Europe delays strict rules for high-risk AI systems

The EU is preparing major rollbacks to parts of the GDPR and AI Act as it faces pressure from Big Tech, the US, and concerns about slow economic growth. The European Commission’s proposal would make it easier for companies to share anonymized data and allow AI firms to train models on personal data if they still meet GDPR requirements.

The plan also delays strict rules for high-risk AI systems until supporting standards are ready. Everyday users may notice fewer cookie pop-ups, with “non-risk” cookies exempt and broader controls handled directly through the browser.

Other changes include simpler AI documentation for small businesses, unified cybersecurity reporting, and central oversight by a new EU AI Office. Critics say the reforms weaken crucial protections and give in to Big Tech, while the Commission argues it’s reducing red tape to help Europe stay competitive in the global AI race. The proposal now heads to the European Parliament and member states for approval.
