Meta won a major antitrust case after a US federal judge ruled the company does not hold an illegal monopoly over “personal social networking.” The FTC had argued Meta dominated the market by acquiring Instagram and WhatsApp, but Judge James Boasberg said the agency failed to prove Meta still has monopoly power — especially given strong competition from TikTok and YouTube.
The ruling means Meta won’t face immediate pressure to unwind its past acquisitions. Boasberg noted that the social media landscape has changed dramatically since the case began, and users frequently substitute between Meta’s apps and TikTok. The FTC called the decision disappointing and is reviewing its options, while Meta said the ruling confirms it faces “fierce competition.”
This marks the FTC’s second major loss against Meta, following its failed attempt to block the Within VR acquisition.
