Meta hits “pause” on XR headsets from ASUS and Lenovo

Extended reality is reaching a turning point as hardware and software finally mature, but Meta’s XR ambitions appear to be faltering. While Apple (visionOS) and Google (Android XR) push forward, Meta has reportedly scaled back its Horizon OS plans, pausing third-party hardware partnerships with ASUS and Lenovo to focus on its own VR devices. With Meta’s mixed-reality headset reportedly delayed to 2027, the company seems to be doubling down on VR gaming, potentially leaving the AR space open for Android XR to capture.
