OpenAI has quietly launched ChatGPT Translate, a standalone translation tool positioned as a challenger to Google Translate. It offers familiar features like automatic language detection and support for over 50 languages, but stands out by letting users easily refine translations for tone, audience or style using AI-powered prompts.
While ChatGPT Translate focuses on contextual and customizable translations, it currently lags behind Google Translate in features such as document, image and real-time translation, as well as overall language support. For now, Google remains ahead, but OpenAI’s AI-first approach points to a future where translations are not just accurate, but highly adaptable.
