OpenAI is developing a new AI-powered device that integrates ChatGPT into everyday, real-world use. The project began in 2024 with former Apple design chief Jony Ive and continued with OpenAI acquiring his startup in 2025. While the exact form factor is still unclear, leaks suggest it may be an audio-focused device, possibly uniquely designed earphones.
According to OpenAI’s global affairs chief Chris Lehane, the first device is on track to be unveiled in the second half of 2026, with multiple devices expected to follow. Current rumors point to an audio product codenamed “Sweatpea,” designed to challenge AirPods, featuring an unconventional earphone design, Samsung’s 2nm Exynos chip and manufacturing by Foxconn.
