Several US states are moving toward stricter age verification to protect minors online. California has already passed the Digital Age Assurance Act (AB-1043), set to take effect in 2027 and now Colorado is proposing a similar law.
The new bill, introduced by Matt Ball and Amy Paschal, would require operating system providers like Microsoft, Google and Apple to verify a user’s age when setting up a device. Instead of sharing exact birthdates, the system would classify users into age groups so apps can decide what content to allow.
However, the proposal has gaps: it applies only to apps (not websites), and users could potentially bypass it by providing false age information. If approved, the law would take effect on January 1, 2028, though it could still face a public referendum.
