A landmark court case has found YouTube and Meta negligent for designing addictive social media apps that can harm users’ mental health.
The lawsuit, filed in 2023, claimed these platforms contributed to issues like body dysmorphia and self-harm by using algorithms and features that encourage excessive use. While TikTok and Snap settled earlier, Meta and YouTube went to trial and lost.
The jury awarded $3 million in damages, with potential additional penalties still undecided. Both companies plan to appeal the decision.
The verdict signals growing pressure to hold social media companies accountable, especially over their impact on younger users and could lead to more similar lawsuits in the future.
