Smartphone satellite business revenue to approach $12 billion by 2030

Omdia forecasts that global satellite direct-to-device (D2D) services will reach 411 million monthly active users and generate $11.99 billion in revenue by 2030, with rapid annual growth through the end of the decade.

By 2030, over 95% of users are expected to rely on standard 4G and 5G smartphones that connect directly to satellites, rather than dual-mode devices with proprietary satellite links. Solutions such as Starlink Direct-to-Cell and AST SpaceMobile will enable existing smartphones to access satellite connectivity, accelerating adoption and supporting emergency communications during disasters.

Satellite D2D is expected to become a common add-on to mobile plans, offering coverage in areas without terrestrial networks. In the longer term, satellite-based broadband will help operators improve rural connectivity and support universal service goals. The rollout of 6G – expected to begin with initial standards in 2029 – will further integrate satellite and terrestrial networks, boosting D2D growth in the 2030s.
