China’s foldable smartphone market grew 48% year-over-year in Q1 2024, outpacing the overall smartphone market’s 2% growth. Book-type foldable shipments surged 91% YoY, while clamshell-type shipments dipped 1%. This shift is driven by consumer preference for the multitasking capabilities and large screens of book-type foldables. Huawei led sales in both categories, boosted by the introduction of 5G-enabled foldables like the Mate X5 and Pocket 2. Recent launches, such as the HONOR Magic Vs2, highlight advancements in lightweight design and software optimization. Despite a cautious approach to new launches, the foldable market is expected to continue its robust growth.
