Telegram confirms it gave U.S. user data to the cops

Telegram has begun complying with more U.S. law enforcement data requests, revealing the IP addresses or phone numbers of over 100 users this year. This marks a policy shift for Telegram, which previously only responded to terror-related cases.

The change came after CEO Pavel Durov’s arrest in France for not cooperating in a child abuse investigation. Telegram now reviews broader criminal cases, leading to an increase in disclosures in multiple countries, including Brazil and India. The company’s updated policy states it may share user data if a valid judicial order confirms criminal activity.
