Microsoft and OpenAI are giving news outlets millions to use AI tools

Microsoft and OpenAI are offering select media outlets up to $10 million in funding to explore AI tools in newsrooms. Grants will go to outlets like Newsday and The Seattle Times to hire fellows for two years to develop AI solutions using Microsoft Azure and OpenAI credits. This initiative, part of a partnership with the Lenfest Institute for Journalism, aims to enhance local media by applying AI to tasks like transcription, content summaries and archive searches. Despite this, both companies face ongoing copyright lawsuits from several media organizations.
