OpenAI plans to release its next big AI model by December

OpenAI plans to release its next major model, Orion, by December, initially giving access to select partner companies instead of a wide ChatGPT rollout. Microsoft is preparing to host Orion on Azure by November, though it’s unclear if it will be branded as GPT-5. Orion, reportedly up to 100 times more powerful than GPT-4, is designed as a significant step toward OpenAI’s vision of artificial general intelligence (AGI). Recently trained with synthetic data from OpenAI’s o1 model, Orion’s anticipated release follows OpenAI’s historic $6.6 billion funding round and key staff changes, including the departure of CTO Mira Murati.
