Norwegian payment app Vipps is the first to leverage Apple’s new open NFC ecosystem, enabled by EU regulations. With iOS 18.1, users can now use Vipps for tap-to-pay and online transactions and set it as their default payment app, breaking Apple Pay’s decade-long monopoly.
This change follows EU rulings deeming Apple Pay anti-competitive, prompting Apple to unlock the NFC API and make other significant concessions, like adding RCS support and allowing more app deletions. The move could lead to a wave of new payment and ID platforms, marking a major shift in iPhone functionality.
