Bill Gates’ nuclear energy startup inks new data center deal

TerraPower, the nuclear energy startup founded by Bill Gates, has partnered with Sabey Data Centers (SDC) to explore using advanced nuclear reactors to power data centers in Texas and the Rocky Mountain region. This collaboration aims to meet the rising electricity demands of AI-driven data centers while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

TerraPower’s Natrium reactor, which recently began a demonstration project in Wyoming, is the only advanced reactor design with a pending U.S. construction permit. The technology, however, faces regulatory hurdles and concerns over uranium mining and radioactive waste storage.

Electricity demand from data centers has tripled in the past decade, prompting tech giants like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon to turn to nuclear energy to power their facilities. TerraPower plans to have its demonstration reactor operational by 2030.
