Amazon hopes to replace 600,000 US workers with robots

According to The New York Times, Amazon plans to use robotics to avoid hiring over 600,000 U.S. workers by 2033, even as its sales double. Internal documents reportedly show a goal to automate 75% of operations, cutting 160,000 jobs by 2027 and saving around $12.6 billion between 2025 and 2027.

To soften public backlash, Amazon has explored using softer terms like “advanced technology” and “cobots” instead of “automation” or “AI.” The company, however, denies any broad hiring freeze, saying the leaked documents reflect only one team’s view and noting it still plans to hire 250,000 seasonal workers.

Experts warn that if Amazon succeeds, it could transform from one of America’s largest employers into a net job destroyer through large-scale automation.
