X has launched Chat, a new encrypted messaging upgrade that replaces its old DM system. Available on iOS and the web (Android coming soon), Chat adds end-to-end encrypted messages and file sharing, plus video and voice calls, disappearing messages, editing, deleting and screenshot controls. However, metadata isn’t encrypted and X admits users currently can’t detect man-in-the-middle attacks. Encrypted DMs first appeared in 2023, but were paused earlier this year — now returning as the revamped Chat.
