OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot are both leaving WhatsApp

OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot are leaving WhatsApp due to new WhatsApp Business Solution terms that ban distributing AI chatbots not made by Meta. The rules take effect on January 15, 2026, and both chatbots will stay available until then. ChatGPT users can link their accounts to keep chat history, but Copilot users cannot.

WhatsApp updated its terms to stop rival AI companies from using its platform as a product distribution channel, though customer-service bots are still allowed. The move means other third-party AIs, such as Perplexity, are also expected to exit — leaving Meta AI as the only chatbot option on WhatsApp next year.
