T-Mobile is bringing live AI translation directly to its cellular network, removing the need for special apps or devices. The new feature, called Live Translation, can translate phone calls in near real time across more than 50 languages and works on any phone – even basic flip phones – as long as at least one caller is a T-Mobile customer enrolled in the beta.
During the beta, users activate the feature by dialing 87 while on a call. The system automatically detects the languages being spoken and translates both sides of the conversation. Because the processing happens at the network level, no additional hardware or downloads are required.
The free beta opens February 11 for eligible postpaid consumer accounts via the T-Life app or T-Mobile’s website. If successful, this network-based approach could make language barriers on phone calls far less common in the near future.
